Every School stakeholder group was involved in the review process – students, parents, staff, Old Boys and School Council members. Coaching is the primary method for improving performance at BGS and is designed to build self-directedness in students, as well as improve academic performance and develop resilience. It is a structured conversation to help your child reflect, set goals, solve problems and plan next steps. The end of the year is a time for reflection on our achievements and areas for growth. Students met individually with their tutors earlier this year to set goals for the semester and the upcoming coaching day on Wednesday 30 November allows them to assess their progress towards each of their goals. It’s also an opportunity to have a longer conversation about any changes in the life of your child.
This year’s Mother’s Day celebration at school provided the boys with a very special reading experience. With their mums by their side, each boy created a wonderful poster that displayed images and information based on an imaginary book character that had evolved from the boy’s favourite book character, and his mother’s favourite one. Our boys have not only embraced the array of reading opportunities offered to them, but most importantly their understanding of the significant value of reading has continued to grow. They are becoming more aware that those individuals who have a love of reading can potentially have a big advantage in life.

And now not only has my perspective changed but moving forward I’m going to try implement some sustainable solutions into my everyday life. We learned that even though some people have quite debilitating intellectual or physical disabilities, their disability does not define who they are. Not every boy is the same, so we find opportunities for boys to take a risk and try new things.
Firbank has close ties with its brother school, Brighton Grammar School, a boys' school. Students of the two schools participate in a number of co-educational activities together such as music and drama. Thanks to the many parents who have completed our annual School Improvement Tool survey.

I recommend parents of students transitioning to Year 7 in 2024 register and tune in to next week’s Crowther webinar to hear more about our Effective Learner Model. Based on the best available research about how students learn, you will be presented with strategies to support your son’s learning at home. The sessions were facilitated by a team of professionals with a range of different skills and experiences. The six sessions built on the themes of regulating emotions, self-awareness and reflection. The boys were guided through a variety of practises and taught some new skills they can use in their daily lives. The sessions included meditation, sound healing, breathing techniques, yoga, art therapy and journaling practises.
We wish our team well as they kick-off the inaugural Positive Masculinity International Conference tomorrow. This event is a testament to the dedication of Dr Ray Swann who has led our work in promoting positive masculinity at BGS. With an impressive registration count of over 180 attendees, it is a clear sign that we are leading the way in this space. Victorian Curriculum eSmart Scope and Sequence is implemented from Years Prep to 12 and supported in classroom by the E-learning Coordinators.
The BHIVE kitchen fit-out is one example of what can be achieved when the community gets behind our plans to provide our boys with the best possible facilities. Through active involvement in a number of community service activities boys learn they are part of the wider Melbourne and global community. For other types of results or rankings, please visit School Ranking Home. There are a large range of factors that impact on academic results in addition to the role played by the school itself. These include the SES background of students, whether the school is selective in its student intake, etc. It is for the reader to do his own research and draw his or her own conclusions.

This week we marked an important milestone in our journey to provide our students with innovative learning environments as part of our strategic blueprint BGS2032. We know that engagement with subjects and with school life more broadly is an important part of what makes a great school. That’s why we’ve designed our subject structure and offerings in the Secondary School to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our students while providing strong pathways for them. The structure and type of offering have a purpose, outlined below, that changes as students move through the Secondary school.
It was a pleasure to welcome all boys and families to the commencement of the 2023 school year. The boys have settled well and are excited to be back, staff will establish routines quickly and I am sure all parents are pleased to have their sons back at school. The Junior School Book Fair for our Prep – Year 6 students and families will be held from Wednesday 18 – Friday 20 October.
