As an integrated extension of the digital canvas, shifting light images flow through the ceiling, wall and water elements of the space, expanding the visual content beyond the canvas into the entire two-storey foyer. A 13m-tall cylindrical, programmable artwork of falling water cascades in multiple forms down through the centre of the space, becoming a gracefully moving canvas for light, laser and projections. Traditions of tiptoeing through silent galleries and viewing paintings from afar in quiet contemplation are forgotten as visitors find themselves interacting with art in ways they never imagined. Rob is a computer engineer with extensive experience in immersive display systems, computer graphics and embedded systems. He has designed and created applications for VR, XR and immersive display rooms, as well as installing and maintaining these systems in galleries and museums around the world. This digital spectacular gives visitors the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in  Van Gogh’s artistry and truly venture into his world. An AI-based algorithm will then deliver a short poem generated on the spot, based on a database of modern Australian poetry. These join our vast Vivid Minds, Light, Music and Food offerings to now make your Vivid Sydney one of the great compre/hensive arts festivals of the world. As usual, it stretches across Circular Quay, The Rocks, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour, and for the first time, additional venues in and around the CBD will be hosting Vivid Music, Vivid Food and Vivid Minds events that bring the entire city into the experience.
Expect over 60 installations by 16 international artists each turning sight, sound, and space into a living illusion. Unlike some popular exhibitions back in pre-covid days, things will never get so packed that you won’t have personal space to enjoy the moving creations. The project is the brainchild of Melbourne-based Grande Exhibitions, which, for more than a decade and a half now, has hosted immersive exhibitions and gallery experiences in over 150 cities across the world. A smaller, family-run venue in Penrith, the rooms here offer a mix of traditional padlock and puzzles as well as high tech props. The owners create each room theme themselves, so you won’t see them replicated anywhere else. You can stop an alien invasion, steal secrets from a lab or claim your inheritance in a grand mansion. Atmospheric Memory is showing at the Powerhouse Ultimo from August 12 to November 5. Tickets are $25 for Adults, $15 for Child/Concession, $65 for Families and $10 for School Groups. Atmospheric Memory draws in many layers of meaning, exploring our relationship with the atmosphere on physical, and philosophical levels, whilst seamlessly inserting commentary on surveillance capitalism, climate change and other social issues.
