You can read this post to find out what made us book an expensive hotel. Our end destination was Taichung, which is about a 2 hours drive south of Taoyuan Airport. Along the way, we stopped by a popular local stall (三義三十年豆花) in Sanyi for lunch. This place is known for its Peanut Soya Beancurd, as well as Hakka dishes which seemed to be a common cuisine in this part of Taiwan. While I was collecting the WiFi, my partner was a short distance away, at another counter collecting our prebooked rental car.
Take off to the Dragon & Tiger Pagodas also known as a temple situated in the Lotus Lake. Walk around in the heat – mid thirties – including up the pagoda to get good shots of the lake and various temples and shrines surrounding it. Built in 1976 the pagodas have intricate and colourful eaves and carvings and appear well maintained. 台東寒單餅 You approach the pagodas via zig zag walkway over the water and enter the dragon’s mouth symbolizing courage. After viewing the pagodas and taking many pics we exit the Tiger’s mouth escaping danger. We head home for a late afternoon snooze in the Grand and tonight take the shuttle bus down to the Shilin Night Market.
A real adventure making it eventually to a car park, Hall 3, adjacent to the Taipeh 101 mall. The mall an up market shopping centre on about 5 floors, every shop an international brand. We don’t even bother to poke our nose in, we are far too tight for this kinda shopping.
At some stretches, we couldn’t even move and I guess domestic travelling must have been at its peak. We took an overnight Cathay flight and reached Taoyuan Airport at 9am on the eve of New Year 2019. Breakfast with a view again at a B&B in CingjingShortly into the drive, it started drizzling. By the time we reached Hehuanshan an hour later, the weather was still bad with on-off rain . The best way to start a day is to enjoy breakfast with a view. Hu Yue Lakeview Hotel sure knows how to delight its guests by reserving a great spot to serve its breakfast. The time and logistics would be challenging if we tried to visit so many places by ourselves. All hotels we stayed are 4 to 5 stars with great breakfast buffet. The tour guide Alan Zhou is very knowledgeable, experienced and helpful. Libraries were ransacked, monuments destroyed or severely damaged, and religious sites and tombs of historical figures were looted and desecrated. The red guards also destroyed many priceless artifacts, like those from the tomb of the Ming Dynasty emperor, Wan Li. In Beijing, the remains of the emperor and empress were publicly denounced and burned. China can count itself very lucky that the red guards and their ilk did not get their hands on the priceless, magnificent and ancient artifacts and exhibits that we viewed today. There were three floors and we could have spent a day on each floor instead of two hours on the lot. We pondered long and hard and decided to get our rental car right at Taiwan Taoyuan Airport and have it for the entire duration of our trip. While Taipei is well connected by buses, MRT and train, it’s a little harder to explore Taichung using public transport.
