Once we entered Taitung, we cycled 20km clockwise to eat and shop before returning our bikes . As we cycle from Highway 11, we will reach 台東森林公園活水湖 in Taitung. This is a scenic park with a lake, popular with joggers and pet dogs.
The old railway station in town plays host to Taitung Railway Art Village, which features rainbow-coloured paper lanterns and the works of local artisans. Pick up handicraft souvenirs and check the schedule for live aboriginal music shows. A former spur-line station once brought trains into the center, the former station is now part of a vibrant urban renewal project, the 'Railway Art Village'.
After dropping our bike and picking up our luggage, we headed to 路得行旅 Norden Ruder for the night. Feels just like our park connector, but slightly more scenic and well maintained. This route is built over old railway tracks, and is part of the 21km “Taitung Mountain/Ocean Bicycle Trail”.
We will have a stop at Maibitou (Cape Cat’s Nose) Park to enjoy the breeze from the ocean of the southernmost tip. You will also visit Eluanbi Lighthouse which is one of the major attractions in the national park. This lighthouse is cylindrical shaped coloured in white and is also renowned as “the Light of East Asia” for its strong optical power of light that can reach 20 miles at most. Kenting Street is where visitors are offered with a complete selection of foods while embraced by enjoying a relaxing holiday ambience.
If you have a week or two in Taiwan, I highly recommend taking a round-the-island trip. Many travelers start a round-the-island trip from Taipei to Kenting in the East of Taiwan, then back north on the west from Kaohsiung to fly out from Taoyuan. The following list of what to do in Taitung is organized roughly from north to south. The East Coast of Taiwan is challenging to get around by public transportation. I highly recommend renting a car because you will want to swing by and take photos of so many scenic spots.
